Description

Built in 1949, the Fleck Brothers Warehouse is a two-storey late Moderne-style concrete structure that was originally connected to a rail spur from the adjacent CPR line. It remains as a rare surviving example of industrial design by prominent local architect William F. Gardiner.

In the late 1890s and into the 1900s, the CPR began leasing and subdividing their property north of Railway Street in response to the growing demand for warehouses and industrial sites. The concentration of industrial structures in this area backing onto the CPR mainline provided advantageous access to both transcontinental railways and trans-pacific shipping.

Fleck Brothers Limited was a prominent local industrial supplier from 1908 to 1970 with their headquarters and primary warehouse located two blocks west at 110 Alexander Street. This warehouse was part of their mid-century expansion in the 1940s and 50s.

A mass timber addition is proposed to the existing building, designed by Perkins & Will architects.
