Description
The oldest part of the Lord Kitchener school complex, the wood-frame building was constructed in 1914. It is particularly significant for its design and for its association with the tremendous expansion of Vancouver before World War I.
Increased school enrollment in the following decades resulted in the addition of a completely new brick-clad school in several stages (Main Building and gymnasium/auditorium, 1925-29 (now demolished); change rooms, 1954; and classroom annex/north wing, 1962). The central part of main brick building was designed by architects Twizell and Twizell.
In 2012, the school had a $18.7 million seismic upgrade. The 1914 building was relocated, rejigged and reinforced, it now connects to the partial replacement school. The brick building was demolished and replaced.
