Description

Trafalgar Elementary School is symbolic of the values of a then-new, Modernist neighbourhood and represents educational principles of the time: child-centered, clean, functional, and flexible. Built from 1946 to 1950, the economical design rejects stylistic historicism and ornament and symbolizes post-war optimism for the future. The building is low and set back from the street, as found in mid-century suburban residential developments. Trafalgar Elementary was seismically upgraded in 2009. The exterior and interior layout was retained and not significantly impacted by the seismic upgrade. Please check out the archival photographs in the Gallery section of this page.
