Description

Opened in 1920 as Prince of Wales School, and designed by Twizell, Birds & Twizell. The namesake honours the Prince of Wales, who laid the foundation stone Sept 22, 1919. The basic layout of the Victorian Renaissance building is a symmetrical barbell plan. Additional wings were added in 1922, and in 1960, when a new Prince of Wales School was opened nearby, the school was renamed Shaughnessy to match the neighbourhood. Shaughnessy School was seismically upgraded in 1997; the main heritage building was upgraded and retained. The heritage elements retained include the brick façade, exterior building details and window design. Please check out the archival photographs in the Gallery section of this page.
