Description
The McDevitt House North, constructed in 1909, is an important example of an early residential building built during a period of intense growth throughout the Strathcona neighbourhood, and throughout the entire Lower Mainland.
Constructed in the typical vernacular Edwardian-era style of architecture, the McDevitt House North was built with local, easily obtained materials and followed a similar modest design plan to many of the city’s early housing stock. The builder of the house, engineer Jeremiah McDevitt, was known as an early Vancouver pioneer, helping to build the New Westminster Bridge in 1902 and other large scale projects in the province.
Between 1903 and 1909, McDevitt designed and built three houses along Vernon Drive including the McDevitt Houses (North and South) as well as the neighbouring house located at 431 Vernon Drive house (built in 1903).
