Description

Gerald Grattan McGeer (1888 – 1947) was Mayor of Vancouver in 1935-36 and 1947.

McGeer was elected by a landslide victory of 25,000 votes. During his time in office he oversaw both the economic troubles of the Depression and the City’s triumphant 50th anniversary year celebrations.

McGeer was responsible for having the current City Hall built. McGeer secured $1 million from the BC government and insisted on the location of the city hall to be in what was then Strathcona Park at 12th and Cambie.

McGeer was twice elected to Parliament and was appointed a senator. He returned to local politics, elected in 1947 and died in office.
