Description

The Robinson Block, a two-storey commercial building with exterior brick walls, was built in 1889. It served as a combined function of commercial space on the ground floor, and a meeting hall on the second. The rear half of the building was constructed c. 1905-1909, during a time of tremendous growth in the city.

Zebulon Franks, a Jewish immigrant from Russia, arrived in Vancouver in 1887 and relocated his general supply store here from Carrall Street in the early 1890’s. His store catered to loggers, fishers, and miners travelling to all parts of the province.

He was also regarded as the leader of the Orthodox Jewish community. After Franks’ death, the business was continued by his family as Y. Franks Appliances, becoming one of the longest operating businesses in Vancouver. The use of the building continues as mixed commercial and retail space.
