Description

This 3 story walk up apartment building was built in 1909-1910 during Mount Pleasant’s boom years when the streetcar route was expanding and the area was becoming a metropolis. “Algonquin Flats” is an example of the Second Renaissance Revival style and represents the kind of multi-unit dwellings built at that time. Arthur Julius Bird, the architect, was London-trained and also designed Main Street’s Woolworth Store & Belvedere Court Apartments. After serving in WWI, Bird returned to Vancouver to play a role in the planning, zoning and contouring of residential streets as both City Architect and Building Inspector.
