Description
The former Cordova Rooms, a hotel built in 1912 to designs of architect Hugh Braunton as a speculative development for D. Campbell, is an excellent example of cutting edge, Edwardian building technology and design. Braunton also designed adjacent hotels at 42 and 54 East Cordova Street in a similar style.
The building illustrates the reforms of City of Vancouver’s 1910 Lodging House By-Law. These reforms emphasized the provision of fresh air, natural light, bathrooms, and fire escapes. Surviving design features include fire escapes, long deep light wells that gave natural light to each room; radiator, a wash-basin, and cupboard in each room, bathrooms and toilets on each floor.
Recently, the building has been used as a government-funded social housing.
