Description
Lord Strathcona School serves Vancouver’s oldest residential neighbourhood. Lord Strathcona School is Vancouver’s oldest continuously used school site. Established in 1891 as East (or East End) School, the school was built in stages between 1897 and 1972.
This Second Renaissance style building from 1897 was designed by architect William Blackmore. Although the building lost its front steps and tower roof, it still features stone trims, arches and sheet metal cornices. The gable cheeks include a sunburst motif, which was popular in the Victorian era.
Lord Strathcona School will receive a $25.6 million for a seismic upgrade. Three of the schools’ five buildings will be upgraded. The brick building received a unique seismic retrofit, a technique known as base isolation was used which essentially cuts the building in half horizontally at its base and inserts rubber buffers to mitigate the shaking. The project received recognition for the use of this technique.
