Description
58-62 Powell is a plain, three-storey, commercial-style office building built in 1910 to the designs of Vancouver architect Joseph Henry Bowman.
The building was likely used by labour agents White and Bishoprick. Labour agents were a component of the mechanism that helped Japanese males immigrate into labour-hungry Canada to work during the pre-First World War boom. Such establishments are significant for having had a direct role in the creation of one of Canada’s earliest Japanese-Canadian communities, centered on Powell Street in Vancouver. Many of these workers were employed at the nearby Hastings Sawmill.
