Description

Built just after the First World War as the local headquarters of the Union Bank, this solid and austere structure also served as the Bank of Toronto from 1926 to 1954, and as the Toronto Dominion Bank headquarters from 1955 to 1971. The granite and terra cotta facade is well articulated in this excellent example of the Second Renaissance style.

This imposing building provides a striking reminder of Vancouver’s banking district of the first half of the twentieth century. The building was donated to Simon Fraser University and incorporated into Conference Plaza, which includes the hotel next door, in a 1999 conversion, becoming the Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue.

Its namesake was a local developer and philanthropist whose family was prominent in the furniture business.
