Description

The Simpson House, a two-and-a-half-storey wood frame residence, was built in 1919. The house is one of the earliest houses in the Kerrisdale neighbourhood. Much development occurred after the introduction of the interurban line along the Arbutus Corridor, and streetcar line along West 41st Avenue, introduced this rural area to development.

It is a Four-Square Style bungalow, with a principal side gable massing expressed with a secondary front and rear gable. It has a full width porch in the front.

The value of the Simpson house lies not only in its architecture, but also in its occupants. In 1948, the owners were Paul Wisnicki and Catherine Chard Wisinicki, who were faculty members at UBC’s School of Architecture. Catherine was the first woman to graduate from McGill University’s School of Architecture in 1943 and was recognized with an honorary degree from McGill in 1966.

The house received a new sewer line in 2011 with the assistance of a VHF Restore It grant.
