Description

Built in 1911 by J.H. Bowman, the school is named for the manager of the Canadian Pacific Railway. It is an example of Georgian Revival style with a modern addition concrete block on the north end. There are two central entrance doors, wooden windows, concrete lintels and sills and granite steps. The cupola was removed but the school is still a typical early brick elementary. Seismic upgrades in 2003 were approached with character retention in mind, as some windows were filled in, but the original outlines were cast in relief to preserve the design. Sir William Van Horne was seismically upgraded in 2003. Heritage elements that were retained include the brick façade, exterior and interior building and details and window designs. Accessibility improvements were made where possible. Please check out the archival photographs in the Gallery section of this page.
