Description
Completed in 1912, Stadacona Apartments is a 5-storey residential building located off Georgia Street at 601 Bute Street. “Stadacona” comes from the First Nations settlement that is now Quebec City, birthplace of owner John Joseph (J.J.) Banfield.
J.J. Banfield commissioned builders T.R. Nickson & Company, and architects Parr & Fee for the residential project. Parr & Fee started their partnership in 1898 and designed a long list of well-known Vancouver sites, such as Glen Brae (Canuck Place), the Vancouver Block, and Gastown’s Hotel Europe.
Stadacona Apartments Italianate style features include red brick, white cornices, and rows of large widows. While office and residential towers surround Stadacona Apartments today, a nearby heritage site of similar style still present is The Banff Apartments.
Originally classified as a B-Listing on the Vancouver Heritage Register, it was re-evaluated in 2018 as an A-listing.
