Description
The Banffshire is a mid-rise residential apartment located off Melville Street at 610 Jervis Street. Built in 1911, the building’s original name was Felix Apartments. Felix Apartments is one of the best-known works from architects Thorton & Jones.
Walter M. Thorton and William F. Jones formed a partnership and designed several residential and commercial projects in Vancouver, including the Victor Hotel (later the Savoy Hotel) and Tweedale Block on East Hastings Street.
The Georgian revival design of Felix Apartments is evident though: the columns at the front entrance, ornamentation that frames the windows, and the horizontal band on the lower façade of the building.
Early and notable residents included Blanchard E. Neville, President and Manager of the Dominion Fish Co. Ltd., and John G. Hay, a Vancouver City Solicitor.
While the surrounding cityscape has changed, a similar residential heritage building in the area can be seen at the Stadacona Apartments.
