Description
The McNair House was built around 1895 and was the first home of James Archibald NcNair’s. He lived here from 1901 to 1904. McNair, known as the Shingle King of North America, was President and General Manager of the Hastings Shingle Manufacturing Company Ltd. This company expanded in 1902 with a shingle mill near the north foot of Commercial Drive that was the biggest in the world.
This heritage home takes design cues from the Victorian Queen Anne era such as patterned shingle sidings (imbrication), finials decorated gables, offset porch, bay windows, spindlework and jigsawn spandrels over windows and porch. Recent renovations include a paint job throughout, refinished original fir floors on main and top floors, and updated bathrooms.
