Description
The Shamrock Hotel is a three-storey building constructed in 1912 by D. McCullam based on an Edwardian design by architect/owner W.A. Urquhart. It operated as a mixed-use building providing housing on the top floors to male industry workers (proximity to Hastings Sawmill) and retail goods on the street level.
The building’s first occupant was a grocer Thomas W. Wood, who may have likely operated the Broccoli Santo grocery (637 E Hastings) listed in 1912 directory. From 1913-1920 the building also housed the Napier Rooms.
Since 1937 it has been known as the Shamrock Hotel and continues to operate as such.
One notable feature of the building includes the presence of glass prisms in the storefront sidewalk which indicates a basement level access, for additional light.
