Description

This Gothic Revival structure has been in continuous service since 1889 making it the oldest surviving church in the city. It was built from 1889-1895 and designed by C.O. Wickenden. Located at one of the most prominent downtown intersections, its context has completely altered with the construction of many adjacent highrise buildings. The church is known for its magnificent stained glass windows and interior hammer beam ceiling. It has served since 1929 as the cathedral of the Anglican Diocese of New Westminster.

Unveiled in 2016 to mark the end of a 20-year renovation on the building, Christ Church has been given a new kitchen, roof and glass bell tower. In 2017 the church was awarded a City of Vancouver Heritage Award of Recognition recognizing the contribution to the community of the significant seismic upgrade and contemporary bell tower.
