Description

Built in 1937, this is the only Vancouver building by Eric Arthur who, as a Professor of Design from the University of Toronto School of Architecture, introduced Ned Pratt, Bob Berwick and a number of other young architects to the International Style.

This brick and glass block clad structure is Vancouver’s best example of the industrial streamline Moderne style. The stretched horizontal lines and swooping curves derive their inspiration from the popular streamline motifs of the period, which were employed in all forms of design from radios to airplanes.

With the construction of the Terminal Avenue Viaduct, built by the C.N.R. in 1937, this area was opened up for industrial development. Canada Packers set the standard for the large utilitarian buildings of the period.
