Description

The Ruth Morton Memorial Baptist Church recalls an early settler from Yorkshire who arrived in Vancouver in 1884 to marry John Morton, one of the “Three Greenhorns,” who in 1862 built a shack on Burrard Inlet, 25 years before Vancouver’s founding. Morton bequeathed funds to purchase land and build a church to be named as a memorial to his wife, Ruth. On June 29th, 1912, a Baptist congregation in what was then a rural part of South Vancouver laid the cornerstone for the church, which was completed in 1914.
