Description
This building (built in 1893) is one of two designed by William Blackmore for John Vermilya, a farmer from Richmond, BC. Vermilya lost the building in 1896 when he was unable to make the mortgage payments.
By 1904, it was home to the McKay and Almond Creamery (an ice cream manufacturer). The building was transformed into the Palms Hotel in 1913, which was torn down in the 1980s.
Today only the façade remains. It is one of two façades incorporated into the Cineplex complex. The other façade is the windowless Art Deco front of the Globe Theatre (1929). It became the Paradise in 1935, the Coronet in 1964, and Granville 7 Cinemas in 1987.
All three facades which make up the 1987 cinema complex are part of the address 855 Granville.
