Description

This four-storey brick hotel was built in stages between 1905-1912. The building was first known as the City Hotel and then as the Anchor Hotel. There was residential accommodation above and entertainment (saloon, bar, pool hall) on the ground floor.

The building demonstrates a pattern of use that was common in this part of Gastown. Many hotels served the itinerant population of loggers in the winter when the camps had shut down.

The hotel was associated with Bill Swanson, who owned an interest in the hotel. Swanson was a wrestler and early pioneer.
