Description
Built in 1889, this one of two buildings designed by William Blackmore for John Vermilyea, a farmer from Richmond, BC. Unable to keep up with the mortgage payments, he lost the building in 1896.
By 1925 the building was owned by the Love family, who successfully ran Love’s Café until the 1960s. Love’s Café’s grandiose bar and cheap fare made it one of the most popular and iconic downtown restaurants of the era. For example, a menu from 1941 shows a 50 cent table d’hote with soup, choice of entree, and dessert.
Since the 1980s, Harbour Dance has continued to use the building’s upper floors, with beautiful large wood windows, as dance studios.
