Description
Known as the Barber-Ellis Building, this building as a prime example of Vancouver’s art deco heritage. This three-storey office building and warehouse building was built in 1931 and designed by Townley & Matheson. The building was constructed by pour-in-place concrete.
The building was the head office for Barber-Ellis, a company formed in 1870 in Toronto by John Ellis and James Barber. At the time this building was opened, Barber-Ellis was the largest envelope manufacturer in Canada. The company also had a factory located at 1206 Homer Street. Barber-Ellis maintained its offices here until 1975. Renovated in 1998, the building houses retail and office space.
