Description

The YMCA has existed in Vancouver since 1886. The first building opened in 1893 on Hastings Street. By 1905, the YMCA opened a building on the corner of Cambie and Dunsmuir streets downtown, offering fitness classes that include the aspects of “hygienic, corrective, educative and recreative exercise.”

This building opened in 1941 and was designed by the prominent local firm of McCarter and Nairne. The building’s historic value comes from the “late moderne” style of the façade. It is also a good example of the urban context at that time, being highly visible in a prominent heritage precinct comprised of the St. Andrew’s – Wesley United Church, Dal Grauer Substation, The Electra (former BC Hydro Building), and First Baptist Church.
