Description
Completed in 1911 and designed by Burke, Horwood and White, the Gothic Revival style church was built at the same time as the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, it features a similar monumental cut stone tower. As the main Baptist Church in the city, its stone walls and fine interior create a sanctuary of calm and solemnity amongst its formal interior layout.
For the past 104 years, the church has continued to grow and its downtown location is now in need of restoration and more space. There are proposals for a Bing Thom designed 56 storey-tower, daycare space, shelter and seismic upgrading.
The air rights to the land beside the church have been sold to Westbank Projects. Currently an application has not yet been filed with the City.
