Description
The Rand House at 995 Bute Street was built at the north-west corner of Bute and Nelson Streets in 1896 and is one of the oldest remaining houses in the West End. It recalls the early development of the neighbourhood, when wealthy residents built their homes on multiple lots to escape the smoke and noise from the port. The house, built in the Queen Anne Revival is one of the oldest surviving houses in the West End.
By 1899, it was owned by Henry Town, a prominent Vancouver resident, who had the neighbouring three houses on Bute Street built on its grounds at that time. Town died in 1905 on a business trip to Australia, leaving the property to his sister Laura. Her husband, Edward E. Rand was prominent in real estate and co-founded Rand Bros Real Estate, today known as Rand and Fowler Insurance. The Rands were residents at the house from 1919 to 1925.
The property immediately to the north is also protected by heritage designation. The Rand House is B-listed on the Vancouver Heritage Register.
The Rand House completed an extensive rebuild & restoration in 2007, winning a City of Vancouver Heritage Award and was featured in Homes & Living magazine.
Rand House was a stop on VHF’s 2015 Heritage House Tour.
